Abstract

This study assessed the reliability and validity of the Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory (Milner, 1986) among the Chinese mothers in Hong Kong. Data of a subsample consisting of 52 abusive mothers (abusive group) who received services from 3 social service agencies as a result of child abuse and 52 nonabusive mothers (comparison group) from the local child care centers were analysed. Results show that the clinical Abuse Scale of the CAP Inventory have Alpha reliability coefficients of .93 and .90 for unweighted and weighted item responses respectively. Besides, the high correlation coefficients between the clinical Abuse Scale and other related scales (GHQ-12, PS1 and UCLA-LS) supported its concurrent validity. In addition, discriminant function analysis indicated that the unweighted 77-item Abuse Scale could distinguish the abusers from the nonabusers with a 90% overall accuracy. On the basis of these findings, the reliability and validity of the CAP Inventory are supported by the data of this sample.
Copyright © 2006 APA.
