Abstract
In terms of curriculum development, there are formal life education programmes and a formal subject universally in Taiwan. The development of life education in Taiwan could be divided into three phases. The first phase was from 1996 to 2006 when the former Taiwan Provincial Authority of Education started the promotion of life education until it was included in the 95 Provisional Guidelines as part of the formal curriculum in senior high schools. The second phase lasted from 2006 to 2011. During this period, the senior high school guidelines underwent the amendment of the 98 Guidelines and the modification of the 99 Guidelines, and “Introduction of Life Education” was renamed to “Life Education,” while the name of the other advanced courses remained unchanged. The third phase was when the 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum was planned and implemented. Philosophy should be the basis of life education due to three main reasons. It helps to define life education in the curriculum.
