The factor structure of the English CBCL DSM-oriented scales in Filipino schoolchildren as reported by bilingual caregivers

Abstract

The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) is an assessment tool that has been translated into various languages for use with school-aged children in different cultures. The English form is used in the Philippines, but there is no published evidence on the CBCL’s structural validity when used with Filipino-English bilingual respondents. The study examined the factor structure of the CBCL DSM-oriented scales in a sample of schoolchildren using responses of their bilingual caregivers. Three competing factor models were investigated and confirmatory factor analyses showed that the six-factor model had the best fit. A multiple-indicators multiple-causes model also revealed some predictive relationships with age and gender. The results provided support for the structural validity of the English CBCL DSM-oriented scales when used by Filipino-English bilingual caregivers of Filipino school children. Copyright © 2018 International School Psychology Association.
