Abstract
Critical inquiry is indispensable for sustaining academic freedom and strengthening an open society. In the post-Soviet states, this inquiry is however feared. The Soviet legacy holders shun critical inquiry to protect their privileges and organizational norms. By engaging in autoethnographic analysis, I discuss how transformative academic development can mitigate their resistance and create the conditions for greater openness and exchange.
