Abstract

This project builds on the results of a TDG project currently carried out in the Department of English whilst greatly extending its area of operation. In the current project, a series of standalone subject-specific websites are being developed to support online delivery of modules offered in the Department of English. The focus of the newly proposed project would be on the promotion of online academic reading among English major students. Fully online sessions will be designed and offered in various modules such as Introduction to Language Studies, Grammar, Language Arts, and Assessment for Learning. Reading focused tasks will be designed for these online sessions, and students will be assessed by the end of the sessions in different formats, such as writing reader responses to online articles, completing online quizzes, and submitting reflective reports. For Language Arts modules, a database of audio recordings of children and adolescent reading materials will be created and presented on the Language Arts website together with related academic articles. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the online reading activities, questionnaires will be designed to survey students about their online reading and learning experience. The promotion of online academic reading will cultivate reading habits among English major students, and help them to become more active and autonomous learners. The pedagogical benefits of blended learning are well established in terms of providing alternative learning spaces and increased use of written feedback from students and staff.
