Teaching development grants final and financial report: Outcomes-based education in Creative Arts & Physical Education

In the light of the University Grants Council's (UGC) push towards outcomes-based higher education, this project investigates the profile and development of the "ideal" graduate in Music, Visual Arts and Physical Education at HKIEd. With reference to key documents such as the "Expected Learning Outcomes for Beginning Teachers" (HKIEd) and the "Teacher Competencies Framework" (ACTEQ), the project seeks to: (1) analyse the extent to which CAPE's curriculum, teaching and learning processes, and assessment are aligned with 'generic' outcomes, (2) develop a discipline-specific profile of desired learning outcomes for HKIEd's graduates in Music, Visual Arts and Physical Education, (3) examine the perspectives of B.Ed and PGDE students, alumni and staff on the 'generic' outcomes published in official documents in relation to each discipline, and (4) benchmark the Music, Visual Arts and Physical Education programmes at HKIEd against self-selected peer institutions outside Hong Kong. Extending over 15 months, this Project employs a mixed-method approach involving document analysis, focus group interviews, survey, case studies, and school observations. The results are expected to lead to a better understanding of the shift from inputs and processes to learning outcomes, and improved teaching and assessment practices within the Department of Creative Arts and Physical Education (CAPE).
