Teaching and learning art through culture

Research output: Contribution to conferencePapers

Abstract

The course “Art and Culture” enables students to examine social, cultural and identity issues in historical and contemporary contexts. The relationship of aesthetics and culture are analysed in various theoretical perspectives, including looking at orientalism, postcolonialism, modernism and postmodernism etc. The presentation showcases how current issues, inter-cultural relationships, and cultural factors affecting art and cultural development in both Hong Kong and the international context are addressed in class. It also demonstrates how students are equipped with the necessary theoretical approaches and be able to make informed judgments and critical analysis of aesthetic and cultural phenomena.
