Abstract

In Hong Kong, the first ever official preschool music curriculum document-Music Activities in Kindergartens was issued in 1992, thereafter, two Pre-primary Curriculum Guides with integrated music learning contents were issued in 1996 and 2006 respectively. The purpose of this paper is to investigate changes in the music curriculum for preschools in Hong Kong since 1992. Contents of the three music curriculum documents including curriculum components such as aims, objectives, learning areas, assessment, class operation, time allocation and facilities will be studied, compared and contrasted. Coupled with the analysis of findings, the philosophy and educational purposes implied behind these music curriculum documents will be discussed, and conclusions and implications for preschool music educators in Hong Kong are then drawn.
