(Re)Understanding the Montessori method

Abstract

The purpose of this paper aims at providing a contemporary (re)interpretation of Maria Montessori's invention of her pedagogical practice to unravel popular misconceptions of the Montessori Method as a rigid and teacher-centered pedagogical model. The discussions in the paper are organized in two parts. The first part seeks to present Maria Montessori's vision of education through her own words. Her thoughts on the role of the child, the role of the teacher, and the role of the environment in classrooms will be discussed. The second section aims to highlight Montessori's notions of "freedom within limits" and "children's work" in education to demystify contemporary misconceptions of the Montessori Method as a rigid pedagogical practice.
本文旨在提供一個當代對瑪麗亞蒙特梭利的(新)註釋,並進一步的解開大眾將蒙特梭利教學法詮釋為以教師為中心的僵化教學模式之誤解。本文分兩部的討論︰第一部分是透過瑪麗亞蒙特梭利本人著作中所描述的教育遠景來理解蒙民思想對教學過程中兒童的角色,教師的角色,與學習的環境是如何詮釋而進行討論。第二部分旨在透過蒙民理念中的兩個概念—“限度內的自由”和“兒童的工作”來重新理解蒙特梭利教學法並非是一個僵化的教學實踐。 Copyright © 2008 The Hong Kong Institute of Education.
