Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the affective characteristics with respect to mathematics and mathematics education of pre-service primary teachers in Hong Kong. The study focuses particularly on the interrelation between these characteristics, using path model to define the relationships of the affective variables and to examine the relative contributions of latent factors. The study is important because teachers’ affective characteristics with respect to mathematics and mathematics education can influence their pupils’ affective characteristics and mathematics achievement. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate the pre-service teachers’ affective characteristics with respect to mathematics and mathematics education and to find out the latent factors associated with them. It was found that the reliability and validity of the measuring instruments for mathematics self-concept, mathematics self-efficacy and learning approaches were high.
