Abstract
This chapter presents the developments in Chinese language education in China since 2000. The Chinese language curriculum has a history of over 120 years, with reforms initiated in 2000 to align with international standards. New curriculum standards and textbooks were developed and various teaching strategies, including inquiry learning, cooperative learning, and independent learning, were implemented. Assessment methods focused on diagnostic and developmental functions, with scenario-based questions emphasising knowledge transfer and language competence cultivation. In 2017, the Ministry of Education published the General High School Language Curriculum Standards, prioritising language use, thinking skills development, aesthetic appreciation, and cultural heritage understanding. Since September 2019, standardised language textbooks published by the Ministry of Education have been adopted in all primary and secondary schools, emphasising the representation of traditional Chinese culture.
