Abstract

This presentation illustrates a Shanghai Lesson Study model which can improve professional development of teachers and enhance learning outcomes of students. The model is driven by the teacher performance assessment reform which aimed to develop an “Education Quality-Centered” accountability system in Shanghai in 2009, and a sense of teacher professional development for improving quality of teaching and learning. Shanghai Lesson Study model is characterized by implementing exemplary lessons (Keli) with the spirit of “academic research” under the teachers’ training system and preparing collaborative lessons in teaching and research system.
A Lesson Study case on a Chinese Language novel entitled the wild goose will be reported to portray how the model is operated in a middle school in Shanghai. The case was conducted through three teaching cycles. Pre and post-test were administrated through final examinations to collect all the learning outcomes of the students. Interviews were conducted with teachers to explore their views on the relationships between their professional development and student learning outcomes. Results show that the student learning outcomes in Chinese Language were enhanced, and teachers have developed their pedagogical knowledge for teaching Chinese Language through this Lesson Study model. While Lesson Study is culturally dependent, this Shanghai Lesson Study model contributes to the transposition of Lesson Study to Mainland China. Copyright © 2018 WALS.
