Abstract

This quantitative study investigated 886 Chinese test-takers' perceptions towards essay tests. Test-takers were found to adopt two strategic approaches to manage rater impressions. While a defensive approach was forwarded, a risk-taking approach was thought to be penalized. Systematic textual analyses explored the textual reasons for the predictive power of test-taker perceptions.
