Abstract

This paper discusses the contribution of subject teaching at primary and secondary levels toward environmental education in a small state - Macau - and examines some of the difficulties of developing environmental education in schools. The results show that education about the environment is emphasised, compared with education in and for the environment. The paper draws special attention to the need for introducing teacher education and curriculum initiatives that promote environmental education. Copyright © 1996 Taylor & Francis, in collaboration with the Institution of Environmental Sciences.
