Abstract

As a TDG project, we have recently launched EdUHK Cantonese Self-Learning Website (香港教育大學粵語自學平台). It is EdUHK’s first self-directed online Cantonese learning platform designed for Putonghua and English speaking learners that has the following features and functions:
(1) Use of Jyutping for Cantonese romanization;
(2) General introduction on Cantonese initials, finals, and tones;
(3) Recorded mini-dialogues relating to campus and local life in Hong Kong;
(4) Putonghua-Cantonese cross-reference lists for Putonghua speakers to grasp the general corresponding rules in pronunciation;
(5) Tone visualizer that provides a visual aid to grasp the combination of tones; and
(6) Mini-dictionary that contains some 6000 Cantonese entries for learners to check simple expressions and pronunciations in Cantonese. Major country and city names, tourist spots and landmarks in Hong Kong, MTR stations, government offices, etc. are included in this dictionary. It can also be used as a drill-generator.
The platform can be accessed at: http://corpus.eduhk.hk/Cantonese/
We hope that this platform offers a powerful tool for anyone who wants to learn Cantonese on campus and beyond. Copyright © 2017 22nd International Conference on the Yue Dialects.
