Abstract

Concrete is the most widely used construction material around the globe. Attempts in economical use of recycled materials for concrete production have been made for years. This research concerns the use of sewage sludge for production of eco-friendly concrete pavement blocks. In this study, sewage sludge was collected from major sewage treatment plant in Hong Kong. Standard tests were carried out to verify the chemical properties of sewage sludge. Trial specimens with various mixing proportions were casted and prepared through a systematic experimental approach. The specimens were tested as per Highway Department Standard for compressive strength and other relevant requirements. The leakage of heavy metal is also verified from the fragment of the specimens according to Toxic Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). It has been shown that concrete pavement block with sewage sludge of up to 5% can comply with the relevant requirements in Hong Kong. Copyright © 2018 Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies Limited.
