Abstract

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, educational fields in Hong Kong and other parts of the world have encountered unprecedented changes, schools were forced to alter their teaching approach from traditional face-to-face teaching to online teaching. To make better use of online teaching tools, this study attempted to develop a self-directed learning website to teach a senior secondary school mathematics unit. Students were given time to go through the website all by themselves. Compared to their pre-test (Mdn = 2), the result indicated that our students (n = 36) had made significant improvement in their post-test (Mdn = 11) and 2-week delayed post-test (Mdn = 11.5). Albeit students are generally positive towards the self-directed learning design, they have also made suggestions on the accessibility and the contents of the materials. Based on the results, we discussed our findings and potential improvements we learned with regards to the design of e-learning tools.
