Abstract

(a) Aim: to provide some background information of the STEM education initiatives in the school curriculum and the STEM learning opportunities outside school.
(b) Main concepts covered: a discussion of the STEM learning ecosystem with the different individual, family, school and society factors influencing students' STEM learning and STEM aspirations. The various studies on STEM aspirations provide insights into the importance of learning from the community.
(c) Main conclusions covered: Some successful cases of community engagement in STEM education will be outlined.
(d) Conclusion/outlook: Some conceptual frameworks are suggested to engage the community more effectively in STEM education. Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
