Abstract
This paper introduces the Project “Capacity Building for Pre-School Children: Health Promoting Kindergarten”, which was funded by the Quality Education Fund in 2005. This is a collaborative project jointly administered by the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. This introduction first outlines the main health problems of young children in Hong Kong and then introduces the major objectives and functions of this project. In the first year, 10 teacher educators have received training to become District Health Advisors and are therefore able to provide advisory services to 100 participating kindergartens in Hong Kong. In addition, several research teams including health workers and early childhood educators have been established, in pursuit of a quality preschool health curriculum for Hong Kong children.
