Abstract
With several thousand years of cultural heritage, China has made great contribution to human civilization. Since the beginning of the 21th century, we have launched the Millennium Project for Chinese Culture Education, to make Chinese culture education an entitlement for all students. This project tailor-makes contents for beginning to advanced learners in primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of education, scaffolding a spiral and systematic learning model for Chinese culture cultivation. It is hoped that this project can strengthen recognition, reflection, and identification of Chinese culture of our next generation, and enhance their critical thinking skills, through which they are expected to establish correct ethical and moral values to foster their cultural confidence.
We need to put ourselves in students’ positions by contextualizing their living environment and social status, and to incorporate the state-of-the-art application of information technology and multimedia when designing teaching materials for Chinese culture education. We endeavor to unearth suitable elements and stories with historic and cultural implications to improve students’ learning interests. Instead of a Chinese culture-centered and close-minded approach, the research team conducts a comparative inter-cultural inquiry which respects multiculturalism, in order to ensure a positive interaction between students, teachers, and teaching designs in the process of learning and teaching for enhanced learning outcomes.
