Abstract

Since 2009, Liberal Studies is one of the core subjects in the new Hong Kong senior secondary education curriculum and has become the topic of much discussion. With the increase of radical social movements among young people, there is an impression that Liberal Studies might have "politicalized" students. In order to help us understand better the influence of Liberal Studies on students, a study on the "Civic Value and Engagement of ‘Post-90 s’ in Hong Kong" has been conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The study findings suggest that students’ interest in Liberal Studies only has limited influence on their civic value and political engagement. Both students who are keen on Liberal Studies and those who are not have little participation in the community and political activities. Actually, "critical thinking" advocated by Liberal Studies does not radicalize the majority of the students but rather encourages the students to think outside of their social status and identity politics, and to discuss public issues with multiple perspectives.
