Abstract

It has been agreed that Tao Yuanming is a reclusive poet in the history of Chinese literature. It seems to be also agreed that Wang Wei is half official and half reclusive, half official and half Buddhist. We agree with the former conclusion but not the latter about Wang Wei. In this chapter, we try to tease out the notions of self-cultivation and the imagery and emotional patterns to explore the reclusive characteristics of the poems written by the two poets. We also discuss whether Wang Wei can be truly characterised as half official and half reclusive.
