Abstract

Controlling corruption is important for improving the modernization of national governance and has drawn the attention of social science studies. However, due to the clandestine and sensitive nature of corruption, and in order to effectively deal with major frontier issues in corruption studies, it is methodologically challenging to obain high-quality data and research output in corruption studies. In recent years, experimental methods have become increasingly popular in exploring frontier issues of corruption research. However, the academic community still lacks a good understanding of the features and pros and cons of these methods. By analyzing 198 SSCI-indexed journal articles from 2000 to 2019 that use experimental methods to study corruption, this article finds that compared with traditional methods in corruption studies, experimental methods may provide more observable data, reveal clearer causal mechanisms for understanding corruption, and help enhance anti-corruption studies, but also provide methodological enlightenment for other research areas relating to public governance.
