Abstract
Two different rules, instead of one rule k’>h>f, should be proposed for the historical sound changes of the Xi(溪) initial in Cantonese, they are k’>h for the Kaikou(開口) rhymes and k’>f for the Hekou(合口) ones. This argument is based on the fact that there is no evidence showing an h-f variation in modern Yue(粵) dialects.
