Abstract

The Chinese language has greatly improved its significance after the 1980s because of the peaceful rise of China and the contribution of the Chinese language teachers around the world. Over 2,000 universities in more than 80 countries offering Chinese language courses. In addition, numerous secondary schools, primary schools and educational institutions have started to teach Chinese as a foreign language. Studies have shown that there are more than 30 million Chinese learners. As an international city where the East meets West, Hong Kong has a diverse mode of development in the use of language and the teaching of language. Local students are expected to be trilingual-proficient in spoken Mandarin, Cantonese and English, as well as written Chinese and English, since this is vital both for their daily life and at work. On the other hand, there is a variety of Chinese language courses for those who have Chinese as their second language. For example, the teaching of Chinese language to the South Asian minorities at the main stream schools, to the students at international schools, to foreign students at universities, and to foreigners at the Confucius Institute and other language schools. Through my investigation of the teaching of Chinese language for international students in Hong Kong, I hope this essay would provide help for the research and development of the teaching of Chinese language worldwide.
