Abstract
The population of the Mainland students pursuing higher education in Hong Kong has expanded tenfold in 15 years. Their adjustment and adaptation to Hong Kong living have since been a growing concern. Research findings show that the pressure of adapting to learning in Hong Kong is multifold: (1) students have to quickly adapt to "westernized" academic learning institutions, which are totally different from those in the Mainland. This also includes the adjustment for secondary school students to university life. (2) Their adaptation extends to other dimensions of their lives, on and outside the campus. (3) Outside the campus, the Mainland students have to face far more complicated environment than on campus in terms of various subcultures existing in the local society. Although Hong Kong is part of Chinese society, students coming from the Mainland still need to learn to adapt to Hong Kong’s learning and working environment. Adapting to Hong Kong is more than just learning the language. It should be a comprehensive adaptation to its culture.
