Abstract

The [n] ending final in the Yiwu dialect, in correspondence with -r suffixation in the Beijing dialect, features the deletion of the final of the original syllable and adding the ending [n]. It involves the changes in nucleus and extension in vowel. The phonetic change of its vowel is regular. The author puts forward that 1) the phonetic change is caused by the deletion of the original ending rather than by the vowel change in the root syllable directly led by the adding of [ n ], and 2) such phenomenon is not suffixation, but a compound syllable by adding the final[n]to the root syllable. The article also gives a simple account on such phonetic change using the optimal theory.
