Abstract
Mu Xin (1927-2011), the “posthumous child of the May Fourth” and the “Robinson of literature”, began his literary career in the 40s of the 20th century. Interrupted during the Cultural Revolution, he did not resume his career until he relocated to New York in the 80s, when his oeuvre caused a sensation in Taiwan. But it was not until 2006 that his collections were published in mainland China, receiving a new round of study. This dissertation analyses the works of Muxin and borrow from the critiques in Hsia Chih-tsing’s A History of Modern Chinese Fiction. More specifically, Hsia based his analysis on “an assumption of a single humanity and universal masterpieces” and the insistence on literary significance over political import. In this dissertation, I will first examine how, in the face of the tension between modern and tradition, the writers of May Fourth new literautre, adopting the “lyricism tradition”, defy the subsuming revolutionary narratives and return to the universal values of literature. I will analyze how the modern literary tradition “Humane Literature” and “obsession with China” influence, promote, but at the same time, hinder the development of the thinkings and works of the May Fourth writers. Situating Mu Xin in this wider historical context of May Fourth new literature, I will argue that the diasporic writer Mu Xin, while preserving the “Humane Literature” tradition of the new literature and embracing different cultural traditions, is able to transcend the ideology of contemporary China and the “obsession with China” and develop the tradition of Humane Literautre and form his own style.
