Abstract
Under the strict social distancing conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals rely more heavily on social media. Based on a representative online survey among university students in Hong Kong, the study revealed the psychological consequences of social media use by employing the stress—strain—outcome (SSO) model. The results of structural equational modeling indicate: news seeking on social media will reduce subjective well-being and increase depression risks. Self-disclosure on social media can alleviate the negative outcome of news seeking. The negative relationship between news seeking and subjective well-being turns positive with the mediation of self-disclosure. Increased news seeking behavior will lead to higher level of compliance with social distancing measures. Despite its negative effect on subjective well-being, social distancing measures cannot mediate the relationship between news seeking and subjective well-being. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
