Abstract

After the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of January 2020, Hong Kong underwent four occasions of school closure; schools adopted e-learning and used online platforms and resources to carry on learning and teaching during the class suspension. History subject was no exception. The author conducted a survey and semi-structured interviews to collect quantitative and qualitative data during the first wave of school closure. According to the author’s preliminary finding, the pandemic has transformed Hong Kong’s history education. Although many history/Chinese history teachers indicated that they had used e-learning in the classroom before 2020, in reality, many restrictions hindered the application of learning technology in history lessons. The situation changed dramatically with the COVID-19 pandemic; almost all history/Chinese history teachers used various e-learning strategies to implement the Education Bureau’s “suspending classes without suspending learning” policy. Consequently, the primary purpose of using e-learning during the class suspension was to ensure that the teaching progress would not fall behind during the pandemic. The application was mainly limited to converting face-to-face instruction’s learning content and pedagogy to online instruction. Nevertheless, this experience has allowed history teachers to deepen their understanding of e-learning, broaden their perspectives on technology-enhanced learning, and strengthen their skills in using various types of learning technology. After several months of online teaching, many teachers are willing to continue to use e-learning in and outside the classroom after the resumption of classes to enrich the content and learning methods of history.
