Abstract

In view of the fact that ethnic minority students in Hong Kong cannot yet adapt to Chinese courses in mainstream schools, particularly encountering difficulties in writing and recognizing Chinese characters, this research, based on adolescents' cognitive development, designs and IT supported, life-experience Chinese course. This course adopts the ”Chinese alphabet teaching method” in teaching writing and recognizing Chinese characters, with an aim to making Chinese learning more interesting and effective. The subjects of this study are secondary students of South Asian descent. Class observations, teachers and student interviews, as well as pre-test and posttest questionnaires for students were conducted in this research to explore the effectiveness of the course. Results show that these students became more interested in learning Chinese after this course, and showed improvement in their Chinese writing and recognition of Chinese character structures. However, in terms of implementation of teaching philosophy and classroom management, some problems still remain to be solved.
