Abstract

Zhou Yi has recognized as “the first of all Chinese classics”. In the past, Chinese intellectuals have relied on it as reference for the great learning, whose goals lead from cultivating one’s person to governing the country. To this day, the implication of its doctrines are still applicable to modern discourse on behavior and conduct, philosophy, astronomy, medicine as well as acts of divination, and it is also an important source of Chinese idioms. Incorporating Zhou Yi into primary and secondary education should be beneficial to the students. Two articles from Zhou Yi, namely Qian Wenyan and Xici Xia, had once been included in the sixth form syllabus of Hong Kong, but it is now be excluded. The reason is related to the difficulty in understanding the ancient style of writing, abstract concept and complex book structure. Yet, if the materials can be designed according to the characteristics of the learning stage of primary and secondary school students, with appropriate teaching approach, it is also feasible to integrate Zhou Yi into the current curriculum. This article will discuss the difficulties, objectives, principles and method of teaching Zhou Yi in fundamental Chinese education.
