Abstract
Recent degradation of the dike-pond system (DPS) in the Zhujiang (Pearl River) Delta reflects dramatic changes in its ecological environment. The sustainability of the DPS is very important because the DPS operations offer not only sustainable income opportunities but also high-yield diversified food production (crops and fish) to the local economy. Using land use (imagery) data, fieldwork surveys and pollution statistics, this paper reexamines issues of environmental dilapidation and pollution in the dike-pond municipalities of Shunde, Nanhai, and Zhongshan. To sustain such dike-pond resources successfully, this study strongly recommends conscientious implementation of environmental planning and management strategies.
