Abstract

The complex "backward" sandhi pattern (i.e., surface [42-24] derived from underlying [24-24] and its domain extension) of the Danyang dialect has extensively been discussed for some time with plausible explanations for its phonological rules unavailable. This article argues that there are two major features that affect this sandhi pattern: one is that the penult syllable demonstrates a tonal form reversal of the final syllable which dominates the domain; and the other is that a syllable insertion occurs in the penultimate of the domain.
