Abstract
In recent years, to facilitate schools’ implementation of “curriculum policies” of the school-based management, the Bureau of Education (EDB) suggested that schools should devise a broad, balanced, flexible and coherent school-based curriculum to ensure all-round and healthy development of students. Although the curriculum integration has become the trend of educational development, the discipline of music and other subjects teaching has often been separated and less integrated with other teaching areas. This study aims to use “music” as a core discipline, using an integrated music activity as an example, share with the preschool practitioners the ways of responding to the integration of music, movement elements and creativity into their existing music curriculum model, so as to make a difference and effective school-based music curriculum to ensure the all-round and full development of children.
The subjects of this study consist of a class teacher and her 20 children aged from 5-6 years in an upper class in a kindergarten. Direct observations are conducted on 20 children and the class teacher in the music activities. By using direct observation and rating scale, children’s creative behaviour and the characteristics of the class teacher’s behaviour are observed for further analysis. The study reveals that a different and effective school-based curriculum is an integrated music curriculum with creativity and fun. When other disciplines are integrated with music, movement and creativity, will make a difference and effective school-based music program in kindergarten. The role of teachers, the design of lesson plan with integrated elements in music activities, and the preparation of creative materials help implement an effective school-based music program that is fun and creative for children.
