Abstract
本文旨在反思基於溝通中國與歐洲不同思維方式的一個學術生命的信仰基礎。借助思考兩位偉大的導師——聖保羅和孔夫子的生命及其智慧,探索了兩個不同文明的根源。文章反思了他們如何準備其生命的終點,也就是一種他們的使命似乎未能最終實現,自己也無從預料會留下長遠遺產的境遇。文章並進一步比較了兩位先哲核心理念之異同,作者認為,正是這些核心理念激發了他們各自富於社會責任和進步的學術追求。
This essay was written as a reflection on the spiritual underpinnings of a life of scholarship that has tried to bridge the different thought worlds of China and Europe. It explores the roots of the two worlds by reflecting on the lives and ideas of two great teachers, St Paul and Confucius. It reflects on how they prepared themselves for the end of life, in a situation where it seemed their mission could not be accomplished and they could not know the long lasting legacy they would leave behind, and compares the their core messages which showed how both would inspire a scholarship that is socially responsible and indeed transformative.
