Description
The major aim is to organize school networks for secondary school teachers to share good practices in teaching students with reading and writing problems. The importance of the network is that the teachers of the network are provided with a platform to:
1. Create space for teachers to develop and broaden curriculum activities;
2. Develop collaborative working practices and overcoming the isolation many teachers feel;
3. Provide a forum in which teachers can discuss and share ideas on teaching and learning and develop new teaching learning strategies;
4. Provide a space in which teachers can mutually support each other.
5. Share what they are doing in their classrooms;
6. Learn new skills and looking at how these can be integrated into the classroom;
7. Examine professional readings and looking at how these fit with the new strategies;
8. Reflect on their experiences and thinking; and
9. Visit other classrooms where good teaching and learning is being modeled.
In the past four years, our team arranged 59 cross-site visitations. In each cross-site visitation, teachers had to try out two sessions of teaching and arrange a post conference meeting. Members were encouraged to attend all visitations. Participants in each visitation were required fill in reflective forms for discussion. Most participants opined that they benefitted from the professional dialogue during the post conference meetings. The dialogue was important for the enhancement of skills and knowledge in the teaching of students with reading and writing problems.
In addition to the exchange of teaching skills and resources among school members, teachers developed new instructional materials for students with reading and writing problems. A set of instructional materials was developed in the School Year of 2014/15. The materials were dispatched to schools in a dissemination seminar.
