Higher education institutions addressing the learning needs of ageing societies

The Project is an international research project on the role of higher education institutions in lifelong learning. The project consists of several case studies of higher education institutions around the world that stand out for responding to societal changes related to demographic shifts through widening access to educational opportunities to old age learners, and for lifelong learning. It focuses on identifying criteria for adequate, needs-based learning provision for older adults. The research project has resulted in a case study that discusses the strategic approach of the Elder Academy at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The case study was entitled "The Elder Academy at The Education University of Hong Kong: Addressing the Needs of an Ageing Society through Teaching, Research, and Service." It was chosen since it illustrates how a higher education institution can successfully align locally relevant solutions for older adult learners with the national active and healthy ageing policy combining the three missions of higher education – teaching, research, and service to society.
