Computational and Experimental Investigation of Aerosol Pollution in Urban Area

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

(Central Research Grant, PolyU, HK$ 150,000, 2008-2009): The emissions, distribution and diffuse processes of aerosol pollutants on a spatially non-uniform street canyon in urban area will be investigated with numerical and experimental method. Based on the experiment results, a new numerical scheme will be developed, considering:(a) the influence of moving vehicles on pollutant dispersion and turbulence in urban streets;(b) the thermal effects on flow and dispersion within street canyons;(c) the sensitivity of flow and turbulence characteristics to the geometry of the street and its surroundings;(d) the dispersion and transformation of traffic-related particles. The contributions of the pollution sources will be examined for decision-making of pollution control strategies and traffic planning, with both simulation and experiment schemes to assess the air quality of street canyons.
