I am Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Co-Director of the Centre for Governance and Citizenship at the Education University of Hong Kong. I received a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Normal University and a Ph.D. from the University of Hong Kong.

I specialize in sociology of education, and my research focuses on citizenship studies in education. More specifically, I aim to analyze how education reforms in the Chinese socialist system accommodate individual citizens’ rising demands for cultural diversity, particularly in relation to ethnicity, gender and religiosity; and how changes in educational practice influence China’s social and political development. I have performed a series of studies on the impacts of globalization and marketization on the education provision for ethnic minority groups; and on the development of citizenship education in China over the past decade.

I am the author of China’s Mongols at University: Contesting Cultural Recognition (Lexington Press, 2010), and a co-editor of Understanding Citizenship Education in China: Multiple Perspectives (Routledge, 2014). I won some competitive research grants, such as Gu Mingyuan Education Research Grant (2007); and General Research Fund (GRF) of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (2015). Prior to joining the Education University of Hong Kong in 2008, I was Assistant Professor at Beijing Normal University.
