Dr. Wang Zhenlin joined the Hong Kong Institute of Education (now Education University of Hong Kong) in 2007. Trained in early childhood education and developmental psychology, her teaching focuses on the area of human development. She is interested in children’s developing theory of mind and its implication in early childhood education.

Research interests

Zhenlin Wang’s primary research interests focus on children’s theory of mind development, and its implication in children’s social functioning as well as early childhood teaching and learning.

Her ongoing research includes four areas:

  1. Theory of mind and epistemological beliefs development: Understanding how mind works helps children to understand how knowledge is generated, and how learning occurs. Hence children’s theory of mind ability is closely related to how they understand teaching and learning, and eventually affects their learning outcome.
  2. Distributive justice and perspective taking: This line of research is about the social consequence of emotional perspective taking (empathy) and cognitive perspective taking (theory of mind). When children see things from other people’s perspective, will they be more prosocial and altruistic? Economic games such as the ultimatum game are used to examine children’s distributive justice, and its relationship with theory of mind and empathy.
  3. Theory of mind development in cultural context: Even though people from all cultures eventually develop a normal functional theory of mind (with the exception of those with autistic spectrum disorder), the developmental process differs from culture to culture. It has to do with the socialization process within the specific culture.
  4. Developmental changes of theory of mind, implicit or explicit: This line of research focuses on different paradigms of theory of mind study from early childhood to adolescence to examine the development from implicit /on-line theory of mind to explicit/off-line theory of mind.
