Suyan PAN is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). Her academic career has been shaped by extensive engagement across diverse higher education communities. She received her PhD from The University of Hong Kong, where she also served as a Research Assistant Professor. Prior to joining EdUHK, she held Associate Professorships at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. She has also been a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. In addition, she has contributed as a Guest Lecturer at the Research Institute for Higher Education of Fudan University and as a public lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge.
Suyan’s research interests lie at the intersection of higher education studies, international relations, and China studies. She has authored two scholarly books and published over 50 articles in refereed journals, edited volumes, and conference proceedings. Her work appears in leading international outlets, including The Pacific Review; Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education; Journal of Studies in International Education; Journal of Education Policy; Higher Education Policy; International Journal of Educational Development; and Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, among others.
Suyan has received numerous honours and competitive research grants, including the Award of Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship (2013) conferred by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong, as well as three Research Grants Council–funded projects totaling over HK$2 million. Her research has been meaningfully translated into the design and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, supporting the supervision of undergraduate projects, master’s dissertations, and doctoral theses across major areas of the social sciences. Her scholarly work and mentorship span themes such as international higher education, citizenship education, and the sociology of education.
Suyan is also honoured to serve at the EdUHK’s Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Futures as Executive Co‑Director of the Centre for Higher Education Leadership and Policy Studies (CHELPS). In this role, she promotes academic development and international collaboration, while fostering connections among scholars and innovative practitioners within the regional and global higher education community.
