Personal profile

Suyan PAN is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). Her professional engagements in higher education are cultivated in diverse academic communities, including a PhD study and Research Assistant Professor at The University of Hong Kong, Associate Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, visiting scholar of the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, guest lecturer at the Research Institute for Higher Education of Fudan University, and speaker of public lecture at the Department of Politics & International Studies of the University of Cambridge.


Suyan’s research interest explores the interdisciplinary fields of higher education, international relations and China studies. She has authored two books and published 50 articles in refereed journals, books, and conferences. Her articles appear in The Pacific Review, Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education, Comparative Education Review, Journal of Studies in International Education, Journal of Education Policy, and Higher Education Policy among others.


Suyan has received many honours and research grants, including the Award of Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship 2013 given by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong, and three competitive research grants totaling over HK$2 million given by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. She has transferred research into the development of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which have nurtured graduate, master’s and doctoral theses studying into the broad themes of social sciences, including international higher education, citizenship education, and sociology of education in the contexts of Hong Kong, China and beyond.
