Professor Andy Cheng is a Professor of the Department of Health and Physical Education at the Education University of Hong Kong. He completed his professional training in Occupational Therapy at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety from Curtin University, and obtained his MPhil and PhD in Orthopaedics and Traumatology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was the first Asian recipient of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Scholarship for postgraduate training on the Work Disability Prevention CIHR Strategic Training Programme at Université de Sherbrooke and the University of Toronto (2008-2010). Before joining The Education University of Hong Kong, he served as Professor of the School of Health Sciences at Western Sydney University, and as Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Cheng is a registered OT (Hong Kong and UK), Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner, Certified Work Capacity Evaluator, and Registered Driving Assessor.

Professor Cheng’s work positions work disability management as a public health issue, with a strong emphasis on injury and ill-health prevention, physical activity participation, and sustained workforce engagement. Drawing on his background in occupational therapy, ergonomics, and health and safety, his research examines the physical, psychosocial and environmental determinants of injury risk, delayed recovery and long-term disability. Through a public health lens, his publications inform population-level strategies for injury prevention, early intervention, and safe return to work, with the aim of reducing disability burden and promoting lifelong health. He has published more than 180 research papers and secured over HK$30 million in competitive research, industry, and development grants. He is recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in rehabilitation by Stanford University. He has also been invited as an expert occupational therapist, preparing more than 60 medico-legal reports on rehabilitative needs for individuals with a wide range of personal injuries.
