Professor Rudolf Wu received his PhD from the University of British Columbia. He joined the Education University as Research Chair Professor of the Department of Sciences and Environmental Studies in January 2016. Prior to this appointment, he was the Chair Professor and Director of the School of Biological Sciences, the University of Hong Kong. He was the Director of the “Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology”, an “Area of Excellence” (funded $66.5 million by the HK government and $31.8 million by the six collaborating Universities). He is also the founding Director of the State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution. Currently, he is the Director of the “Regional Centre of Excellence in Marine Pollution” of the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia, United Nations.
Professor Wu is ranked the top 1% scholar in his field (Essential Science Indicators). His research primarily focuses on the responses of marine animals and ecosystems to environmental stresses (especially hypoxia, xenobiotics and endocrine disrupting chemicals). He has published one book, five book chapters, and over 250 papers in leading journals in environmental sciences, environmental toxicology and marine ecology. Professor Wu was the associated editor of five international journals, and also the Chief Guest Editor of seven special issues of the journal "Marine Pollution Bulletin".
Professor Wu has served on numerous high level committees of the Hong Kong government (e.g. Chair of Research Assessment Panel, Chair of the Fisheries Advisory Committee, member of Research Grants Council and Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene) as well as expert/advisory groups of many international organizations (including the United Nations, the International Maritime organization, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Food & Agriculture Organization and the Environment Agency of the United Kingdom). He has been commissioned by the United Nations and International Atomic Energy Agency to conduct more than 30 international training workshops covering a wide spectrum of topics including environmental impact assessment, environmental risk management, food security and public health, marine ecosystem management, and environmental monitoring and control.
Prof. Wu has secured over $140 million competitive research grants (as Principal Investigator), and completed numerous consultancy studies with a total contract value more than $40 million. Results and recommendations of many of his studies have formed the scientific basis and legal framework of environmental management in Hong Kong.
