Dr. Shin KATAOKA received his BA in Chinese Studies from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (東京外国語大学), and MSc in Applied Linguistics from University of Edinburgh. Dr. KATAOKA was awarded his PhD in Chinese language & literature from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (香港中文大學) for his doctoral dissertation entitled "The Aspectual Suffix Gan in Cantonese: A Diachronic and Synchronic Study", that examines the historical development paths of the Cantonese progressive marker Gan 緊. Dr. KATAOKA has a wide range of research interests, including Chinese linguistics, history of Cantonese grammar and romanization systems, cross-cultural communication, sociolinguistics, contrastive linguistics, and toponymy of Hong Kong place names. He has taught a number of language and linguistics courses in Japan, UK, and Hong Kong.
