Professor ZHU is a renowned scholar in Chinese linguistics. He is currently a Research Chair Professor of Chinese Language and Chiang Chen Chair Professor of Chinese Language at the Department of Chinese langauge Studies, and Director of Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education. Before joining The EdUHK in 2009, he was a full professor in Chinese linguistics at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Deputy Director of the Research Center for Chinese Linguistics, and Dean of Yuanpei College, Peking University. Professor Zhu became a Chair Professor at former Department of Chinese, HKIEd in January 2009. After that he was appointed as the head of Department of CHI from July, 2009 to June, 2012 and of Department of CHL from July, 2012 to September, 2015.
Professor ZHU has his B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Northwest Normal University in 1982, M.A. in History from Middle China Normal University in 1986, and Ph.D. in History of Chinese Language from Sichuan University in 1990. He won the scholarships respectively from the Sino-Indian Culture Exchange Program to study Sanskrit and Buddhism in Delhi University in 1992 to 1993 and from the Committee on Scholarly Communication with China (CSCC) in USA to do research in the University of Pennsylvania in 1994 to 1995. Professor ZHU has taught more than ten different courses to BA, MA or PhD students at several Universities from 1982, including at Sichuan University from 1990 to 1998 and at Peking University from 1998 to 2008. He has published more than 120 books and papers in the area of historical Chinese linguistics and literature, and won the national academic awards 5 times, including The First National Youth Outstanding Social Science Achievement Award in 1994, The First National Humanities and Social Sciences Research Outstanding Achievement Award in Higher Education Institutions in 1995, The 5th National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education in 2005, and 6th National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education in 2009, etc.
Research interests
Professor Zhu’s research and teaching interests include Classical Chinese, History of the Chinese Language, Buddhist Hybrid Chinese and History of Culture Exchange between China and India.
External Appointments
Professor ZHU currently is an Adjunct Professor at several universities, including Research Center for Historical Chinese Linguistics, Zhejiang University, and Faculty of Arts, Jilin University. He also serves as council member of the Chinese Language Society since 2001, member of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Chinese Folk Culture, Sichuan University since 2008, and sits on the editorial board of multiple academic journals including JCL etc.
