Personal profile
Dr Derwin Chan is a health psychologist with diverse research interests in the areas of health promotion, sport and exercise science, and behavioural medicine. He is an Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education at Education University of Hong Kong. Derwin is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow with the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Scientist with British Science Council, and a registered consultant of occupational safety and health. He has over 100 publications of peer-review articles or book chapters related to the psychology of health, sport and exercise, and medical treatment. Derwin’s research primarily focuses on psychosocial, motivational, and social cognitive processes underpinning individuals’ health behaviours, including (but not exclusive to) sport and exercise, treatment adherence, and the prevention of injury (e.g., domestic injury), deficiency (e.g., myopia), diseases (e.g., influenza, COVID-19), and illegal substance-use (e.g., doping in sport). Derwin examines the relative influence of significant others (e.g., teachers, parents, teammates, physicians, and physiotherapists) on the promotion of health behaviours, and he develops evidence-based digital health interventions (e.g., eHealth, mHealth systems) to facilitate health behaviour change in school, and other health settings. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Stress and Health, Advisory Editor of Social Science & Medicine, Executive Editor of Health Psychology Bulletin, and editorial board member of six other scholarly journals.
