Prof Tong is currently Professor in the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, EdUHK. He obtained his PhD in Chinese Literature from the University of Sydney and MA, Cert.Ed. and B.A.(Hons) from the University of Hong Kong. Before joining the HKIEd in 1995, he started his teaching career as Chinese Language teacher in secondary schools in 1986. He is a core member of the Research Centre into Language Education and Acquisition in Multilingual Societies (RCLEAMS) and his research interest is on language competency, classical Chinese literature, and language education in multilingual context. He has co-authored four books and published a series of papers on language competency and classical Chinese literature education in Hong Kong, Mainland, Singapore and Canada. In addition, he has also been invited by international publishers, journals to review academic publications on Chinese language education. He also serves on various committees of the Education Bureau and Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority.
