Personal profile

Personal profile

Professor Glenn Stockwell specialises in computer-assisted language learning (CALL), mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), and the integration of new technologies into second language education. His work bridges theory and practice, examining how technology can enhance language learning while keeping pedagogy, learner needs, and teacher development at the centre. Over the past three decades, his research has shaped international debates about technology-mediated education and its implications for learners, teachers, and institutions.

Professor Stockwell is Editor-in-Chief of Computer Assisted Language Learning (EIC 2024–present; Associate Editor 2009–2023), one of the world’s top-ranked journals in applied linguistics and education (2024 rankings: 1/297 in Linguistics; 9/756 in Education & Educational Research). He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics; Founding Editor-in-Chief (2005–2023) and now Honorary Editor of The JALT CALL Journal; and serves on the editorial boards of both the CALICO Journal and ReCALL. Through these leadership roles, he has guided the field’s publishing standards, mentored early-career researchers, and shaped the direction of CALL and applied linguistics research globally.

He has published numerous books, journal articles, and book chapters. His sole-authored book Mobile Assisted Language Learning: Concepts, Contexts and Challenges (Cambridge University Press, 2022) is widely recognised as a landmark in the field, offering one of the first comprehensive accounts of mobile learning for language education and shortlisted for the British Association of Applied Linguistics Best Book Award. He is co-editor of The Cambridge Handbook of Technology in Language Teaching and Learning (2025) and is working on further volumes for Cambridge University Press, alongside numerous chapters in flagship handbooks and encyclopedias. His work is widely cited and is listed in the top 2% of the Stanford/Elsevier list of Top 2% Scientists Worldwide 2024.

Beyond publishing, Professor Stockwell has been deeply involved in building international communities of practice. He currently chairs the International CALL Research Conference and has recently taken responsibility for the International Applied Linguistics Research Conference, providing platforms for scholars worldwide to share research and pedagogical innovation. He has delivered over fifty invited keynote and plenary talks across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania, further evidence of his global influence.

He is also an experienced supervisor and teacher, having guided more than seventy master’s students and six doctoral candidates to completion, many of whom now hold academic or professional positions internationally. His teaching philosophy emphasises connecting theory with practice, enabling students to apply research insights to real-world educational challenges.

In addition to academic leadership, Professor Stockwell has held senior administrative roles, including Associate Dean of the School of Law and Associate Director of the University Admissions Center at Waseda University, gaining broad experience in governance, curriculum reform, and internationalisation.

Professor Stockwell’s current projects investigate the impact of generative artificial intelligence on second language writing and explore self-directed teacher professional development in technology-rich environments. These initiatives extend his long-standing interest in balancing the affordances of new tools with their pedagogical and ethical implications.

Through his scholarship, editorial leadership, teaching, and service, Professor Stockwell has established himself as a leading international figure in CALL and technology-enhanced language education, contributing to both the advancement of knowledge and the improvement of professional practice worldwide.

Research interests

Professor Stockwell’s research centres on the relationship between technology and language learning, with an emphasis on ensuring that digital innovation supports sound pedagogy. He has published extensively on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), examining issues such as learner engagement, autonomy, task design, and the affective and contextual factors that shape technology use. His work consistently bridges theory and practice, providing conceptual frameworks for understanding how tools can be integrated meaningfully into curricula. More recently, he has extended his research into the implications of artificial intelligence for second language acquisition, contributing edited volumes and special issues that critically assess both the opportunities and challenges of AI in education. Across his projects, he highlights the importance of teacher professional development, investigating how educators adapt to emerging technologies and how institutions can support innovation responsibly. His publications appear in leading journals and edited collections, and his research continues to inform both scholarly debates and practical approaches to technology-enhanced language learning worldwide.

Teaching Interests

Professor Stockwell’s teaching is closely aligned with his research expertise, emphasising the integration of technology into language education and the preparation of postgraduate students for advanced research and professional practice. At the master’s and doctoral levels, he has taught courses in computer-assisted language learning (CALL), mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), second language acquisition, and educational technology, as well as research design and methodology for applied linguistics. His postgraduate teaching focuses on helping students critically evaluate theoretical frameworks, design technology-mediated learning environments, and apply research insights to real-world educational contexts. He has supervised more than seventy master’s theses and six doctoral dissertations to completion, with many of his former students now holding academic and professional positions internationally. Stockwell’s teaching philosophy is grounded in the principle of bridging theory and practice, ensuring that postgraduate learners develop both the scholarly expertise and the applied skills necessary for leadership in the rapidly evolving field of language education.

External Appointments

Professor Stockwell has contributed to the profession through a wide range of scholarly and service activities beyond his formal editorial and leadership roles. He is co-editor of two major book series: Language Teaching Insights (Castledown) and Cambridge Elements in Technology in Language Education (Cambridge University Press), both of which provide important platforms for disseminating innovative research and practice in applied linguistics and educational technology. In addition, he has acted as guest editor for several special issues in leading international journals, bringing together researchers to address timely topics such as the pedagogical potential of artificial intelligence and the evolving role of mobile technologies in language learning.
